We have decided that there are several terms a person should know when they own one of our products. These terms will come in a series of posts and we will continue to update them. Today we have some networking terms:
A Static IP address is one that is permanently assigned to a computer. Every time that computer logs onto the internet or network, the name server assigns it the same address as it had before.
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is a process where a device on your network (in this case the router) acts as a DHCP server. It simply assigns IP addresses to devices on the network if they are set up to get their IP addresses automatically.
Static IP address is a permanent IP address fixed to a single computer by internet service provider & remains associated with that computer for extended period of time.
DNS stands for Domain Name Service. Most DNS errors usually indicate lack of a connection to the internet. DNS is used to translate human addresses (for example, http://www.bhcblog.com) into computer addresses (like 10.64.254.11). When you hit a DSN error it usually means your computer can’t get to the internet. If it only has the problem for certain addresses it means that either there’s no entry for it or perhaps you mistyped it.
WEP stands for Wired Equivalent Privacy, a standard for WiFi wireless network security. A WEP key is a security code used on some Wi-Fi networks. WEP keys allow a group of devices on a local network (such as a home network) to exchange encoded messages with each other while hiding the contents of the messages from easy viewing by outsiders. A WEP key is a sequence of hexadecimal digits. These digits include the numbers 0-9 and the letters A-F. Some examples of WEP keys are: 1A648C9FE2.
Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and Wi-Fi Protected Access II (WPA2).
Routers take information that arrives through your broadband signal via a modem, decipher it, and deliver it to your computer. The router will also choose the best route for the data packet so that you receive the information quickly.
Is a twisted pair cable for carrying signals. This type of cable is used in structured cabling for computer networks such as Ethernet. It is also used to carry other signals such as telephony and video.
This is a 48- or 64-bit address associated with a network adapter. While IP addresses are associated with software, MAC addresses are linked to the hardware of network adapters. For this reason, the MAC address is sometimes called the hardware address, the burned-in address (BIA), or the physical address. MAC addresses are expressed in hexadecimal notation in the following format: 01-23-45-67-89-AB. MAC addresses are often considered permanent, but in some circumstances, they can be changed.
A local area network (LAN) consists of two or more computers connected together in a building or home using software and hardware. In a LAN, there is a main computer or server, and remote computers called clients. By creating a LAN in the home or office, computers on the LAN can share files, resources.
A Wide Area Network (WAN) is a network that spans a large geographical area, the most common example being the Internet. A WAN is difference to smaller local area networks (LANs). You must acquire a LAN connection before you can get a WAN.
